2018 Tony Predictions
2018 Tony Predictions
Today are the Tony awards. I have random challenges and one of my goals was to see every Tony nominated show before the awards. I was lucky enough to do that and below are who I think will win and what some of my favorites are:
Musical: The Band’s Visit should win, but I enjoyed Mean Girls more although The Band’s Visit’s music was amazing
Best Play: Harry Potter: The Cursed Child – This show left me in awe. Great storytelling and presentation
Best Musical Revival: A hard category for me. I think My Fair Lady has a strong chance of winning, but I hate the story (although the performances were great with Lauren Ambrose kicking ass as Eliza Doolittle). I hope Once On This Island wins though (and it has the possibility of doing so)
Best Play Revival: Angels in America. Not even a question
Lead Actress Musical: Katrina Lenk (The Band’s Visit)
Featured Actress Musical: Lindsay Mendez (Carousel) is probably the favorite to win, but I liked both Ashley Park and Ariana DeBose’s characters and hence, performances more
Lead Actor Musical: My favorite was Joshua Henry (Carousel), although Ethan Slater (SpongeBob) did an amazing job also
Featured Actor – Musical: This one for me was the hardest category. I thought they were all strong performances. My favorite probably won’t win (Alexander Gemignani), but Norbert Leo Butz (My Fair Lady) should win and Gavin Lee is another strong contender, although Ari’el Stachel did an amazing job also. Like I said, this was the hardest for me
Lead Actress Play: Glenda Jackson (Three Tall Women). Didn’t love the play, but her performance was amazing
Featured Actress Play: Another hard category, but think Denise Gough (Angels in America) should win
Lead Actor Play: My favorite, just because of his stage presence, was Denzel Washington, but think the award should go to Andrew Garfield (Angels in America)
Featured Actor Play: Nathan Lane (Angels in America) was great and should win, but I was really impressed with Anthony Boyle (Harry Potter) also
Book of a Musical: Tina Fey (Mean Girls)
Original Score: David Yazbeck (The Band’s Visit), although it’s hard to bet against the powerhouse of the Lopez team
Direction – Musical: This one’s tough. I liked Tina Landau (SpongeBob) and think she should win, but other strong contenders are Bartlett Sher (My Fair Lady) and David Cromer (The Band’s Visit)
Direction – Play: John Tiffany for Harry Potter (before I saw Harry Potter, I thought Angels in America’s director Marianne Elliott would win)
Costume Design – Musical: I think My Fair Lady (Catherine Zuber) should win, but what do I know
Costume Design – Play: Katrina Lindsay (Harry Potter)
Scenic Design – Musical: I think Once on This Island (Dane Laffrey) should win, although I think all the nominees make sense, but again, what do I know? My Fair Lady also impressed me, but think David Zinn for SpongeBob is the favorite here, which makes sense
Scenic Design – Play: Christine Jones (Harry Potter)
Choreography: Justin Peck for Carousel
Orchestration: Jamshied Sharifi (The Band’s Visit)
Sound Design – Musical: Walter Trarbach (SpongeBob)
Sound Design – Play: Gareth Fry (Harry Potter)
Lighting Design – Musical: Another hard category for me and one that I don’t know much about. I think my favorite would be for Carousel, but think SpongeBob or Once on This Island will win, with me hoping Once on This Island wins
Lighting Design – Play: Neil Austin (Harry Potter)
*There was only one show I didn’t see that had a nominee (Meteor Shower with Amy Schumer nominated for Best Actress in a Play), and I did have a ticket for the show, but the performance was cancelled the day of.
If you’ve read this far and want to see a cute, enchanting musical, purchase tickets for The Band’s Visit now before they win all the awards tonight and tickets become much harder to get at reasonable prices.
